Sister Germaine Helwig

An oral history of Sister Mary Germaine Helwig, a Sister of Charity of Seton Hill from 1933 until 2010. The interview was conducted by Sister Marie Corona Miller on April 4, 1987.

Sister Mary Germaine Helwig - born Mary Elizabeth Helwig on November 29, 1915 - entered the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill in September of 1933. She received a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Seton Hill College in 1949 and a master's degree in chemistry from Notre Dame in 1959. She taught at several Pittsburgh area schools, most notably at Bishop McCort High School in Johnstown, Pennsylvania from 1953-1965 and 1966-1980, as well as at Greensburg Central Catholic High School from 1965-1966 and from 1980-1988. Upon retirement, she tutored students at Geibel Catholic High School in Connellsville, Pennsylvania, and at Seton Hill College. In 1993, Seton Hill College President JoAnne Boyle honored Sister Mary Germaine with a Volunteer of the Year award. Sister Mary Germaine died on March 4, 2010.
