An oral history of Sister Mary Thomasine Steel, a Sister of Charity of Seton Hill from 1940 until 1999. The interview was conducted by Sister James Marie Malone at Saints Peter and Paul Convent in Tucson, Arizona on March 29, 1987.
Sister Thomasine Steel was born on March 10, 1921 in Altoona, Pa. Daughter of Thomas C. Steel and Catherine Luddy, Mary Catherine Steel entered the community on September 8, 1940 as Sister M. Thomasine Steel.
Sister Thomasine ministered as a music, piano, and choir teacher at middle and junior high schools in Pittsburgh, Greensburg, Altoona-Johnstown, and Tucson. Among the schools she worked at were St. Mary's School in Blairsville, Pennsylvania, Holy Innocents in Sheraden, Pennsylvania, SS. Peter and Paul in Tucson, Arizona; St. Anselm's School in Swissvale, Pennsylvania; St. Edward's School in Herminie, Pennsylvania; and Cathedral School in Altoona, Pennsylvania. She also served as principal of SS. Simon and Jude School in Blairsville from 1963 to 1969. She was especially prominent at SS. Peter and Paul School, Tucson, where she first taught from 1949 to 1952 and again from 1969 to 1988.
Sister Thomasine earned her B.M. in Music Education from Seton Hill College 1956 and earned her M.Ed. in Elementary Education Administration from the University of Pittsburgh in 1967. She was known in the community as an organist and poet.
Sister Thomasine Steel passed away on September 23, 1999 at the age of 78.
