An oral history of Sister M. Baptista Madden, a Sister of Charity of Seton Hill from 1944 until 2005. The interview was conducted by Sister Marie Corona Miller on January 21, 1989 and March 15, April 5, June 20, August 15, and September 11, 1998.
Sister M. Baptista Madden was born on June 17, 1919 in Youngstown, Ohio. Daughter of Joseph E. Madden and Helen F. Lothamer, Mary Helen Madden entered the community on September 8, 1944 as Sister M. Baptista Madden.
Sister M. Baptista did some work in stenography and secretarial service before entering the community. She began her ministry teaching at schools in the dioceses of Pittsburgh and Altoona. She served as Assistant Dean of Women at Seton Hill College from 1948 to 1958, and as Dean of Freshmen at Seton Hill from 1958 to 1964. She served as Director of Initial Formation for the congregation from 1964 to 1969 and served as General Secretary of the congregation from 1969 to 1977. She served two terms as Major Superior of the community, the first term from 1977 to 1981, and the second term from 1981 to 1985. After she stepped down in 1985, she served as a pastoral associate for Saint James Parish from 1985 to 1998, and as a volunteer for Jeannette District Memorial Hospital from 1998 to 1999.
Sister M. Baptista earned her B.A. in U.S. History with a minor in Latin from Seton Hill College in 1955 and earned her M.A. in Guidance from Catholic University in 1965.
Sister M. Baptista Madden passed away on January 25, 2005 at the age of 85.
