An oral history of Sister Ida Marie McCarthy, a Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill from 1926 until 1989. The interview was conducted by Sister Marie Corona Miller on October 8 and 21, 1986.
Sister Ida Marie McCarthy was born on December 1, 1908 in Swissvale, Pittsburgh, Pa. Daughter of Jeremiah McCarthy and Margaret Loftus, Margaret Mary McCarthy entered the community on September 8, 1926 as Sister Ida Marie McCarthy.
Sister Ida Marie taught primary schools throughout the Dioceses of Greensburg and Pittsburgh. The schools where she taught include Holy Cross, Youngwood; St. Anselm, Swissvale; Resurrection, Brookline; St. James, Wilkinsburg; Cathedral, Greensburg; St. Jane de Chantal, Bethesda, Md.; the Day Care Center, Greensburg, Seton Hill, Greensburg; and St. Edward, Pittsburgh. She also served as principal at St Jane de Chantal from 1953 to 1959, Mother of Sorrows in Murrysville from 1962 to 1965, and Holy Cross from 1965 to 1968. Beginning in 1974, she performed home visits to the elderly in the parishes of Greensburg and Irwin, before her retirement in 1984.
Sister Ida Marie earned her B.Ed. in Kindergarten and Primary Education from Duquesne University in 1951.
Sister Ida Marie McCarthy passed away on February 3, 1989 at the age of 80.
