An oral history of Sister Marian Clare McGurgan, a Sister of Charity of Seton Hill from 1926 until 1994. The interview was conducted by Sister Jean Ann Wilburn on October 12, 1986.
Sister Marian Clare McGurgan was born on September 15, 1899 in Pittsburgh, Pa. Daughter of Peter P. McGurgan and Catherine Agnes Holley, Marian Lucille McGurgan entered the community on March 25, 1926 as Sister Marian Clare McGurgan.
Sister Marian Clare ministered as a teacher to schools in both Pennsylvania and Arizona. Initially teaching in junior high schools in the Pittsburgh area, she performed a mission to the Saints Peter and Paul School in Tucson, Arizona as a music teacher and choir instructor for twenty years. After this time, she was reassigned to Pittsburgh and continued to teach at secondary schools within the diocese, including John the Baptist, Lawrenceville; Sacred Heart, Shadyside; and Canevin, Crafon.
Sister Marian Clare received her B.A. in Music with a minor in English from the University of Arizona in 1944 and received her M.A. in Religious Education from Providence College in 1966. She was renowned for her efforts to promote the liturgical policies of Vatican II. In 1967 she was a founder of Seton Hill’s Institute for teachers of religion.
Sister Marian Clare McGurgan passed away on October 31, 1994 at the age of 95.
