An oral history of Sister Mary Germaine Helwig, a Sister of Charity of Seton Hill from 1933 until 2010. The interview was conducted by Sister Marie Corona Miller on April 4, 1987.
Sister Mary Germaine Helwig - born Mary Elizabeth Helwig on November 29, 1915 - entered the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill in September of 1933. She received a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Seton Hill College in 1949 and a master's degree in chemistry from Notre Dame in 1959. She taught at several Pittsburgh area schools, most notably at Bishop McCort High School from 1953-1965 and 1966-1980, as well as at Greensburg Central Catholic High School from 1965-1966 and from 1980-1988. Upon retirement, she tutored students at Geibel High School and at Seton Hill College. In 1993, SHC President JoAnne Boyle honored Sister Mary Germaine with a Volunteer of the Year award. Sister Mary Germaine died on March 4, 2010.
