An oral history of Sister Marie Stephen Jablonski, a Sister of Charity of Seton Hill from 1919 until 1998. The interview was conducted by Sister Marie Corona Miller on April 6, 1987.
Sister Marie Stephen Jablonski - born Helen Jablonski on February 24, 1899 - entered the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill in May of 1919. Her biological sister, Sister M. Pancratius Jablonski, entered two months before her. Sister Marie Stephen attended the Providence Hospital Training School and became a nurse in 1923. She received further training and became the first certified anesthetist in the community in 1938. She worked at Providence Hospital in Pittsburgh throughout the twenties and thirties for a period of thirteen years, working there again in 1956-1959. She also spent time serving at Roselia Foundling and Maternity Hospital from 1943-1954, at McGuire Hospital from 1954-1955, and at Assumption Hall from 1955-1956. From 1959-1980 she served at Seton Hill College, filling the role of Infirmarian for the Sisters and the college students from 1965-1977. Sister Marie Stephen died on August 16, 1998.
