An oral history of Sister Mary Ellen McAvoy, a Sister of Charity of Seton Hill from 1926 until 1997. The interview was conducted by Sister Brigid Marie Grandey on November 1, 1986.
Sister Mary Ellen McAvoy was born on October 27, 1903 in Frostburg, Md. Daughter of Thomas P. McAvoy and Ellen C. Cunningham, Mary Rose McAvoy entered the community on September 8,
1926 as Sister Mary Ellen McAvoy.
Sister Mary Ellen worked for six years as a secretary before entering the community. She ministered as a secondary education teacher in schools throughout the dioceses of Pittsburgh, Altoona, and Tucson, Az. Among the schools she taught at were St. Anselm, West End, Cathedral, Holy Innocents, Sacred Heart, Salpointe, and St. Mary in Chandler, Az. She also served as principal of Holy Innocents from 1950 to 1953. She later served at Seton Hill College, first as a secretary from 1972 to 1978, and later in supportive services from 1978 to 1984.
Sister Mary Ellen earned her B.Ed. in History and English from Duquesne University in 1945 and earned her M.A. in Religion from Providence College in 1956.
Sister Mary Ellen McAvoy passed away on July 11, 1991 at the age of 87.
