Sister Mary Rebecca Kelsey

An oral history of Sister Mary Rebecca Kelsey, a Sister of Charity of Seton Hill from 1928 until 2001. The interview was conducted by Sister Jean Ann Wilburn on November 1 and 7, 1987.

Sister Mary Rebecca Kelsey - born Mary Dorothy Kelsey on October 4, 1910 - entered the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill in September of 1928. She received a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Pittsburgh in 1941 and a master's degree in education from Loyola University of Los Angeles in 1958. Sister Mary Rebecca served as a teacher at St. John the Evangelist School in Pittsburgh from 1930-1935 and at Sacred Heart Elementary School from 1935-1936, going on to teach at Sacred Heart High School in Pittsburgh from 1936-1940. She then taught at St. Luke High School in Carnegie from 1940-1942, returning to Sacred Heart High School from 1942-1952, 1956-1957, and 1963-1969. In the early fifties Sister Mary Rebecca was missioned out west, teaching at Salpointe High School in Tucson, Arizona from 1952-1956 and at Seton Catholic Tri-City High School in Chandler, Arizona from 1969-1974. In later years, she served as Seton Hill College Treasurer and as an assistant in the library from 1975-1985. Sister Mary Rebecca Kelsey died on May 14, 2001.
