Sister Mary Robert McManama

An oral history of Sister Mary Robert McManama, a Sister of Charity of Seton Hill from 1933 until 1994. The interview was conducted by Sister Brigid Marie Grandey on October 31, 1987.

Sister Mary Robert McManama was born on December 24, 1908 in Gadsden, Alabama. Daughter of Robert W. McManama and Clara Rose Martin, Clara Rose McManama entered the community on March 25, 1933 as Sister Mary Robert McManama.


Sister Mary Robert ministered as a high school teacher of math and English and as a librarian at schools in the dioceses of Pittsburgh, Altoona, and Phoenix. Among the schools she taught at were Cathedral High School, Altoona; St. Luke High School, Carnegie; Elizabeth Seton High School, Pittsburgh; Sacred Heart High School, Shadyside, Pittsburgh; Holy Innocents High School, Sheraden; anSt. Mary, Chandler, Az.; St. Anselm High School, Swissvale; Bishop Boyle High School, Homestead; Mon Valley Catholic High School, Monongahela, and Seton-LaSalle High School, Mt. Lebanon, Pittsburgh. Upon her retirement, she worked as a librarian at Assumption Hall.


Sister Mary Robert earned her A.B. in English with a minor in Mathematics from the University of Pittsburgh in 1948 and earned her M.Ed. in Library Science from Duquesne University in 1960.


Sister Mary Robert McManama passed away on April 27, 1994 at the age of 79.
